Students of Sholokhov Moscow State University for the Humanities get not only their professional training, but also a wide range of psychological tools, which help them to make good use of the knowledge gained.
The period of one term-time is optimal for a first-year student to choose his future profession. A special science discipline seriously helps him. “Life-Navigation” is a new discipline, introduced into Sholokhov Moscow State University for the Humanities in 2010. This course, shared by all faculties and majors, is becoming a distinguishing feature, a trademark of our university. Today we are interviewing the author and the mastermind of “Life-Navigation” course, professor, Vice-Chancellor for Educational Work, relations with Social and State Organizations, Doctor of Psychology, Alexander Sergeyevich Ognev.
— Alexander Sergeyevich, how did the idea to create the “Life-Navigation” course come up? What events of present-day reality inspired both your colleagues-co-authors and you to create this program and introduce it into the university?
— Whatever success is, 65-70% of it depends on the quality and quantity of social contacts. And the art to establish good relations with those around you is of crucial importance.

The greatest living scientist, psychologist Alexandr Grigoryevich Asmolov claims that today a new “Psychozoic Era” has come. The world around us is full of regular drastic changes in many spheres of life. You can compare yourself with your parents: you possess less life experience, but keep far much knowledge in your head in spite of the fact, that your parents got proper education. In comparison with the old times, the psychogenic exposure has risen tenfold, hundredfold, even thousandfold. Consequently, all the life priorities undergo a very thorough change. But the system of searching for new priorities and building the strategy does exist. A reasonable man should make way for a wise man, because the inner life of a person is much more difficult than those causal relationships, which a wise man can establish. Nowadays a man is expected to make wise, economically literate, socially-oriented decisions and decisions of social utility. It is necessary to combine such virtues as benefit, dream, knowledge and love into one. Therefore the main objective of psychology is to set up the most effective system of success-finding.

— What forms the basis of the correct and effective direction finding? What’s the starting point?
— A person gets over the periods of instability and disorderliness with difficulty, he is at a loss and often doesn’t know what steps he should take. It is better if steps are taken according to the certain patterns of previously gained success, which proved to be effective. There is a certain type of decision procedure, enabling to synchronize a person’s acts under the circumstances of making choice. — It is “Life-Navigation” that embraces these most productive patterns of behavior in complicated circumstances. It makes it clear that the main leading light in the whole life is a dream. “Life-Navigation” helps to revel human resources you should have in order to achieve your aims, implement your ideas. The chief means is “My own self”.
— What does “My own self” stand for? Does that mean knowledge, appearance, place of birth, social background, network?
— “My own self” is a combination of qualities that every man possesses, that can be developed and made an effective working means. Seven basic abilities for effective problem-solving were worked out in Harvard University, namely: initiative, taking over the responsibility, motivation, strong interpersonal skills, self-discipline, ability to exert influence on necessary people, ability to harmonize the interests. It is the right thing the person needs to fulfill his dream. “Life-Navigation” is a useful means of developing such qualities.
